Vincent VanGogh, still, but softer

"A painting is a series of colors, laid on in a logical progression resulting in the illustration of an idea." Paul Gauguin with a founding thought for modern painting.

I've loved VanGogh, the reasons have changed over the years. In high school I remember one of his self-portraits. I made a painting of it because of the way the painting made me feel, and that's what painting is about. Later, I was into self abuse, and who better to follow than VanGogh?

I mention this because I've made a point of stepping away from Vincent, yet the following are several more of his pieces done with 1988. As luck would have it, or there's no such thing as a coincidence, most were done 100 years to the month of the originals.

Sunflowers (1888)

Starry Night (1889)

Flowering Garden (1888)

"first version, page 14, Balance

Public Garden with a Couple and Blue Fir Tree (1888)

Garden with Weeping Tree (1888)

Orchard in Bloom with View of ArIes (1888)

Three Cottages in Saintes-Maries De-La-Mer (1888)

I can't say I'll ever let go of my interest with VanGogh, though I do believe I've come to grips with the idea of artist as something other than suffering. Perhaps it's some aspect of my personality that requires taking on the simple and complex, simultaneously. Anyways, Vincent’s style will always

be appreciated and I hope to carry it on.
