2001:

The 2001 Golf Season was my first as a retired person and I had treated my self to a brand new set of Titliest irons (DCI 990’s), a 10.5 degree Titliest Titanium 975D Driver and 14.5 degree 975F 3 metal, a Scotty Cameron Pro Platinum putter, AND a Black and White Titliest golf bag full of 90 and 100 compression Titliest golf balls. Adequately equipped, and with sufficient time available (playing in two leagues, one the Tuesday night Lakeshore Back Nine League, the second, Deerfield Photochemicals League), I also joined Deerfield Country Club as an Associate Member, allowing me to play anytime Monday through Friday, with a cart.

The 2001 season for me, in summary, goes like this. Carl and I finished second in the Wednesday night Photochemicals League, after leading the league for most of the season. I believe Chris Glover’s power of the pen, adjusting handicaps and such, finally wore us down and after early August, which was unmercifully hot, neither on of us really cared that much. I know my focus began to change away from Deerfield and towards Lakeshore so we kinds of just “lost interest”.  In the Lakeshore League, we became very competitive and finished, on September 11th (note the date), 2001, pretty much in the middle of the pack, BUT within reach of first place. Next year we will belong to Lakeshore, we will be playing both the front and back (from white tees, no less), AND I believe we will improve our finishing position.

For me personally, I guess I’d have to say my most improved club was my driver, which I consistently hit in the fairways at about two hundred sixty or so yards. My sand wedge made me many, many birdies with a soft, lob shot for a tap in, and that Scottie Cameron putter, well, all I can say is the guy who sold me my clubs said, “Of all the stuff you bought, this club is the best.” He was right, as I really thought everything was going to go in.

My stroke average improved each month, from 4.88 per eighteen holes in May, to 4.82 in June, to 4.77 in July, to 4.74 in August, to 4.63 in September, and finishing, slightly up 4.68 in October. For the season I played 1008 holes with 4785 strokes for 4.75 per hole, or 85.4 as an average score for eighteen holes.

I am pleased with 2001, and looking forward to hitting better drives, better approach shots (on the greens), better chipping and making more putts in 2002. I’ll keep you posted, and this is THE greatest game of them all.
