March

March 3rd

It’s Monday, it’s zero (again) with snow showers and there’s eighteen days until the first day of spring. There are NO signs yet of an early start, except maybe massive wishful thinking and we’re behind by 36 holes from last year (through February) and another possible 54 in March 90 total by the end of the month. Hopefully spring will break, the course will open, and we’ll start playing soon. It’s tough up here in the tundra, but spring sure will be beautiful and most appreciated.

March 10th

The week of March the 10th started, pretty much, like the previous, zero Monday, then the temperature began to increase to thirty-three on Tuesday, thirty-six on Wednesday and forecasted increases through Sunday that ends at sixty, sixty. Still, no golf has been played outdoors, the ducks haven’t flown north (yet), but spring is in the beginning of happening. I’m encouraged, to say the least and think, possibly, a spring “the first” opening (or shortly thereafter, like April 1st) now, at the very least, seems possible.

March 17th

The forecast was pretty good and the temperature got to fifty-six on Sunday, March 15th and sixty-seven on Monday. The snow and ice has begun to recede, finally, and our course may not be opened next week, but others probably will. It looks like the week of March 24th could be the start. I’ll keep you posted. Here’s a photograph of the first hole on Tuesday, March 18th, 2003.

March 24th

The snow is finally gone, and it’s been warm a few times, but not lasting warm, just passing. This week should be mixed, as is the problem of March, but tomorrow, Tuesday the twenty-fifth, we should play outside, somewhere. Last week the courses usually open were predicting the following weekend (last), so I think Shadow Lake, or Brae Mar is a distinct possibility. Were going to the Spring Member’s Meeting on Friday at Lakeshore (the club), so we’ll see when our home course will open. I’m still hoping for the first week of April. As I’ve too often by now said, “It won’t be long now”.

March 31st

Well, there were two rounds played in March, both at Shadow Lake, both not bad. Lakeshore Country Club opened for business on Friday, March 28th at noon. Saturday and Sunday were continued cold with Monday, the last day of March, mostly the same. The forecast says, “improving”, but they don’t pin themselves down much to a SPECIFIC date. The season is here, at last, the course is open, at last, and now all we need is some warm weather to last, at last. Here’s a photograph of the tee at number one, waiting.
