Chandra Levy and Congressman Gary Condit.

Chandra Levy was a California graduate student who was working on her Masters Degree from the University of California doing “intern” work at a Washington, DC prison and, incidentally, “allegedly” having an affair with her Congressman, six term conservative Democratic, and married Gary Condit when, in May of 2001 she vanished without a trace.

It took some time, several weeks of investigation by the DC police, to flush out Gary Condit, whom did admit having a “relationship” with Chandra Levy, but claimed to know nothing of her disappearance. The news stories raged for months with Condit having several, I think four, meetings with the DC police, appearing in a televised interview with, of all people, Connie Chung, as the Levy family along with the media all but accused Condit of murdering their missing daughter.

This story was THE lead story for months until September 11^th, 2001 when crazy people crashed airplanes full of people into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania killing over 3,000 people and putting the United States into a state of war with terrorists around the world (Osama bin Laden and his bunch in particular).

The Congressman Condit and Chandra Levy story went away until February of 2002 when Condit tried to run again for a seventh term in his district, and was defeated in a primary by one of his protégés.

Chandra Levy has not been found. Gary Condit was never charged with anything.

I guess it just goes to show you that if you have a double life, as Condit did, it’s going to catch up with you one day, one way or another and I guess you can also say that left to the press, anyone can be ruined.

I do wonder how many folks who threw stones at Gary Condit were doing the same as him?

An Update (June 15^th, 2002):

Chandra Levy’s remains were found at the end of May, about a year after she disappeared. Gary Condit, and the whole story surfaced again, complete with the Levy’s on television and accusations (not directly, but kind of between the lines) concerning Condit, the lame duck Congressman from Modesto, or there about. The District of Columbia police have said little in a month, though it does appear as it did at first, she’d been killed in a jogging/mugging incident, probably by one of the local, known bad guys. The Congressman from Madesto (or there about) remains crushed by the moralizing press, because they can.
