Timothy McVeigh, mass
murder.
Well, it’s been several years since Tim McVeigh blew up a Federal Building in Oklahoma City, killing one hundred and sixty eight people, eighteen or so of them children who happened to be at a day care school in the building. McVeigh has been tried and convicted, sentenced to death and moved to Indiana where the sentence was to be implemented. In the meantime, McVeigh has confessed to this crime in a book, published, and sent several letters to various newspapers claiming responsibility, and when asked, “What about the children that you killed?” he defined them as “collateral damage”. He announced his intent to die, said good-bye to his family and began the wait for his final injection, originally scheduled for May 11, 2001. He was to defy the government one last time, by dieing for his beliefs.
Then comes news that the Government, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, had not turned over to Timothy McVeigh’s defense team, some four thousand documents prior to his trial. The Attorney General of the United States, John Ascroft (who, by the way, had suffered a difficult Senate confirmation hearing due to his alleged right wing leanings) announced that the execution was to be delayed until June 11th, 2001 to provide the trial judge time to review these “missing” documents and determine if they may have been relevant to the original trial, and if so determine the proper course of action. This process may lead to a new trial based upon information within the thirty thousand pages. The Judge was given all the documents and will make a ruling on Wednesday, June 6th, 2001.
In the mean time, Timothy McVeigh, in some alleged attempt to once again point out the evilness of the Federal Government, instructed his lawyers to appeal his conviction and request a new trial for a crime he had previously, and publicly pleaded guilty for and, by the way, been convicted through the ordinary process of a trial by jury. Timothy McVeigh’s point is, I suppose, “Look how screwed up the FBI, and Federal Government is”.
The Government countered by filing an action requiring compliance of the original sentence, stating that the “missing” documents do not change the case against Mr. McVeigh.
On Wednesday June 7th 2001, United States District Judge Richard Matsch ruled that the documents provided to him by the FBI, the missing documents not filed with the defense or court before the original trial, played NO significant role in evidence that may have been used by the defense to change the outcome of the trial, at which Judge Matschhd presided. Timothy McVeigh’s attorneys appealed to the US Circuit Court of Appeal for a reversal of Judge Matsch’s ruling, and we’re denied. Timothy McVeigh instructed his lawyers NOT to appeal to the United States Supreme Court (odds are they would not have even heard the case), and the execution of Timothy McVeigh remains scheduled for Monday, June 11th at 7AM.
For two days, Saturday and Sunday, I went to play golf in Canada and therefore, thank God, missed most all of the crap presented on television to the American public by the press who were trying for ratings or too afraid not to be in the middle of Timothy McVeigh’s cess-pool. I came home late Sunday nigh and slept until almost eight o’clock on Monday, June 11th, 2001, fortunately sleeping through yet another press proclaimed “event of the century, first time in thirty eight years for a Federal execution”. The President of the United States of America, a fellow brought to us via the strangest election in at least one hundred years (see George Bush, President, in this section) made a speech to the public indicating justice had been served while again, I can see Timothy McVeigh smiling.
Timothy McVeigh, mass murder was put to death by lethal injection on Monday morning, June 11th, 2001.
PERIOD.
