Henri Matisse, Paul Cezanne, Renior and Claude Monet

Henri Matisse would have been someone I'd like to have spent time with, so we did the next best thing, we worked together. During 1988, in the book Coincidences, much of my freedom I owe to Henri. His colors and apparent simple construction, which if one tries, one redefines the word simple, added to my growth as a painter. Pablo said, "there’s really no one but Matisse", and Pablo was right.

Paul Cezanne was a good time. We walked fields and painted and he showed me painting may take more than a few hours: He showed me that hard effort; over weeks, not hours, teaches a painter more. He taught me that patience and strength over time are the tools.

Claude Monet and Renoir smiled at me, touching my shoulder.

Wine and Fruit, Shadows and Light

Pablo said of Cezanne, "if he was Spanish, he would have been hung".

I'm glad hp wasn't.
