Early thoughts in 1996.
In 1996 I turned fifty and came to see my
career over in terms of promotion and, or raises. That became OK with me after
a year struggling with it, drinking too much and wasting time trying to make
changes in a place where making people look bad, rather than actually making
changes, had become the new way to get ahead.
I finally gave up, but it took twenty-four
years and five months to do it. All the experts now say that staying with one
company for an entire career is a thing of the past, and I guess that's true,
but the environment now created is an environment of everyone for them selves.
The good news is only five years to go,
the bills are paid, and the savings are in place to retire.
All is not lost; just on hold for a
little while longer.
