Prologue
Diversions is about the last ten years of my career
at Eastman Kodak, endeavouring to do, as Dave McConnell
so eloquently said, “Get some of those team things”.
I thought, always did and still do, that people would, if
given the chance, take responsibility for themselves.
They would set their own goals, as defined by what was
best for the business, put plans in place to meet
those goals, measure how they were doing, and if everything
was OK, continue on and if not, make the necessary
adjustments.
All I can say is this.
At Eastman Kodak, where I worked in the
Photochemicals processing plant, this is NOT true.
I don’t know why what seems like a logical thought
could not be put into practice, but after nine (9) plus years
trying I had to come to the conclusion that yes, it
was (as Judy had said so many years before, “ It’s impossible
to fix Photochemicals”).
Try as I did, one political set back after another
prevented the correct people from staying long enough to straighten out the
reporting process once and for all.
I retired after twenty-eight years, eight months and
three days, still trying to do what I thought was my job;
make the place better than when I started.
I’d love to hear your comments.
